The Protective Company No. 1 of the Fairmount Fire Department is initiating its inaugural Bunk-In Program which coincides with the Fire Protection & Technology curriculum at Onondaga Community College.
This program benefits both the Fairmount Community as well as the students themselves. The community benefits by having trained firefighters living at the firehouse during the school year. Students are required to answer alarms whenever they are at the firehouse. If an alarm comes in and the student is getting prepared for school, the student will not be required to respond to the alarm. The student’s education will always be our #1 priority.
The program also benefits the students by not only giving them a free place to live while they are enrolled in college, but also by gaining the experience of being a firefighter in a busy and very aggressive fire department. Students are welcome no matter if their call volume is 90 or 900. The Fairmount Fire Department averages 800 calls per year, but is on track to do over 1000 this year.
The Bunk-In Annex is located next to the firehouse and has 3 individual rooms and 1 double dorm style room to accommodate the students needs. Each student has their own bed, under the bed dresser drawers and a closet. The Bunk-In Facility also includes a work/study area with wireless internet capabilities, a kitchenette, showers and laundry machines. The firehouse has a fully equipped kitchen, lounge, game room along with fountain soda and popcorn machine. All other food is supplied by the student.
Bunk-Ins must meet the following to apply :
- Must already be an active member of a volunteer fire department in New York State and stay active while being a student bunk-in.
- Must have already completed NYS Firefighter 1.
- Must be enrolled in the Fire Protection Technology Program at Onondaga Community College.
